As a Spokane Birth Photographer I have had the honor and joy of being invited into more than 50 births. Being invited to share in such an intimate space fills my heart with so much love. The home birth of Tatum was no different. Read his story, is his mama’s own words:
“I never expected baby #3 to arrive like he did. But it was perfect and he is perfect, and I couldn’t ask for more.
Wednesday, August 31st was a busy day. I knew I needed to get my bum in gear and get the house in order. I knew baby was coming soon, but I didn’t know how soon! I had contractions through the day, off and on but nothing serious. I didn’t think twice about them. That night, we stayed up a little later and watched a movie with my parents. I ended up cleaning the kitchen and organizing a bit after that, while everyone else was sleeping. At about midnight, I crawled into bed.
Within minutes of lying down, there was a contraction. This one seemed a little different. A little while later, there was another. 15 minutes later, another. That’s when I started timing. The next few hours were spent on my hands and knees, rocking back and forth on our bed through the waves. For a little while, I was able to sleep between, as they were coming 15 minutes apart. I labored this way until about 4am when I finally accepted that this was “it” and I hopped in the shower to hopefully ease the pain.
In the shower, having the water fall on my lower back felt amazing. The next thing I knew, one contraction came and I felt the urge to push. This surprised me, as I imagined being in labor most of the day like both previous pregnancies. I got out of the shower and it was about 5am. My husband was just waking up and I filled him in on how I had spent the last few hours. I told him I needed the pool filled up and that our baby was coming today.
I didn’t want him to call our midwife or photographer because I was nervous they would come and have to wait for too long. Ha! He insisted that he call them and I thank God he did. Once the pool was ready, I couldn’t wait to get in. I got in for a few minutes and then got out to use the rest room. I got back in the pool and felt another bathroom urge. This is when my midwife and photographer arrived, and also when my water broke. I got back into the pool and things quickly progressed. After my water broke, it only took 20 more minutes. It was 7:41 am and there he was, Tatum Johnson, perfect in every way. He came out fast, into the water and into my arms as his daddy sat right beside us. His two big brothers were upstairs playing and waiting, along with their Grammy and Papa who were patiently waiting to hear his first cries. He came faster than both of his older brothers and he was bigger than both, as well. He is as perfect as can be and has already created so much joy for our family. We weren’t sure if we would try for a third baby, but God knew that we needed him and we couldn’t be more grateful.”
