Being a Spokane birth photographer I have had the honor of attending all types of births. This time my client was delivering at BirthWise Birthing Center at Deaconess Hospital. These newly remodeled suites have include hydrotherapy tubs and showers, perfect for laboring mamas. Birthing balls, birth stools, TENS units and rocking chairs are also available for use. Great huh?!
Jess and I met months earlier at one of our local Starbucks coffee shops. Her and her husband, Nate, were expecting baby #2, a boy. We went over her wishes for delivery, and birth photos. After one false labor call, I got the call that “it’s baby time” early on a Friday morning. When I joined them at the Birth Wise Birthing Center, Jess was in the tub laboring with constant contractions. As time passed her midwife had a feeling something may be going on as Jess was very pale and shaky. It turns out that she had a slight infection going on which meant she needed to transfer upstairs for the remainder of her labor and delivery, just as a precaution.
Once she got settled in Labor and Delivery, the anesthesiologist was called to get the epidural started. After the epi was admitted Jess was able to relax a little bit and focus on bringing her baby earthside. Not many pushes later and he was out! There was a risk for infection so he was taken to NICU. It was decided that I would come back to finish photos when things calmed down a bit. He ended up spending almost a week in NICU [all was ok!] , so I went to their home the day after arriving home to capture more photos of their sweet family. His big sister was so in love!
