The birth of Cruz is a beautiful story of a tandem nursing, home water birth. When I first met with Nick and Kyra for our birth consultation I immediately adored their family. You know when you just click? I felt that way, right away. They welcomed me into their home to share their desires for a family centered, home birth. While their son played around us, we chatted for at least an hour and toured the house to see where Kyra’s ideal labor set up would be. Fast forward to “the call” and their story unfolded before my lens.
The day of birth Krya texted me to say thing were happening and we stayed in close contact from there on. After a few messages back and forth, and her sending a picture of her contraction times that she was charting I made the executive decision to join her. She thought it may still be too early, but that birth photographer intuition was screaming “GO NOW”. Thankfully we were closer than normal as my family was spending the Memorial Holiday weekend at our family cabin. When I arrived about 15 minutes after letting her know I was on my way, her midwifes, Hazel Tree Midwifery, were unloading their car. I introduced myself and made my way inside.
Kyra was in her bedroom, walking, working through contractions.

Leaning into the bathroom counter for support as contractions tore through her body.
Once the bathtub was the correct temperature and water height, Kyra eased herself into the tub for relief.
Her husband joined her in their bathtub as her support in labor. With his arms around her, she relaxed into the process of bringing their 2nd son earthside.
He was [and is] her rock as contractions intensified.
With her midwife close by the birth of her son wasn’t far off.
After discussing laboring positions it was determined that she might be benefit from stepping out of the tub to change positions. As her mom gently cradled her, her labor progressed.
Not long after Kyra decided she wanted back in the tub, as she was hoping for a water birth. Both her mom and husband did not leave her side.
A few pushes later and their son, Cruz, made his appearance.
